Website

The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP) empowers urban Indigenous individuals to train for, prepare for, and find jobs through their Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) program.

CAP’s ISET program helps high school students and adults who haven’t completed high school take the next step in their careers. Many of their clients also navigate life with disabilities, so we designed the ‘6 Steps to Planning Your Career with CAP’ website to be a simple, accessible, and easy-to-use tool. This online resource empowers users to explore career options at their own pace, making planning for the future less overwhelming and more exciting.

How we helped

We collaborated with the ISET team to refine their content, ensuring it was clear, accessible, and easy to understand. Our goal was to make the information approachable for a wide audience, including those who may have left school early or face learning challenges. By simplifying language and structuring content thoughtfully, we created materials that empower people to navigate their goals with confidence and ease.

When building the website, we structured the content to mirror the six-step process as closely as possible, helping to reduce cognitive load for users. Each page follows a consistent format with a clear table of contents, allowing users to navigate directly to key sections. Large introductory text, short columns with headings, icons, and strategic use of bold text help visitors scan information quickly. Interactive flashcards and step-by-step guides provide breaks from reading while reinforcing key concepts and practical skills in an engaging way.

Inspiration

The colours and imagery of the site are influenced by the sunrise, aurora borealis, the moon, and trees and plants. We rendered these in a dotted style reminiscent of Christi Belcourt’s beadwork-inspired paintings.

Representation Matters

We created three illustrated characters that serve as guides for the site: Lily Lafontaine, Keegan Martin, and Robert Arnaq are former ISET program participants, and their friendly and relatable presence throughout the site serves as a reminder that if they can do it, so can you. The new website provides a seamless user experience and inspiration for high school students and mature students/adults who are looking to build their careers.
